Urcia Surf School in Huanchaco was founded in 2002 and is run by professional surfer Juninho Urcia and his family. Having lived in Huanchaco for many generations and with our family roots in traditional ‘caballito de totora’ fishing with reed surfboard-like boats, we know the ocean and the waves like no other. We are proud of this heritage and would love to share our passion for surfing in Peru with you!

So that besides improving your surfing skills, you can learn a new language. Or go on our caballito tour to get to know the centuries old fishermen culture of Peru. I spent some months in the Urcia Surf Hostel as volunteer and as guest. The small family hostel has a great vibe as the cozy little town Huanchaco. There are perfecto waves for every surf level. I improved my surf like nowhere before due to the help of the professional surfers and surf instructors Juninho and Randu.Thanks for the amazing time in the Urcia hostel to Esther, Juninho and rest of the familiy!❤️

Best surfhostel in Huanchaco, small and with family feeling. Highly recommended the surfcamp. I was there for over one month and will come back one day. Miss it already.

I spent an unforgettable month with Urcia Surf School. I have no complaints. The waves in Huanchaco cannot be compared and the wave is super good. All the people are very friendly and willing to help in any way. Urcia provides very good boards and everything you need at a good price. I feel very lucky to have been able to be part of the Urcia family and for that, thank you very much! I highly recommend this experience and look forward to going back (Jamie, 22, England)

I loved the Urcia Surf School! Very good Instructor's for surfing and they have also packages for doing a tour to Chicama or caballitos de Totora tour and more! The people behind the desk in the surf shop are super friendly. A guy his name is Nici from the desk helped me a lot and I had a lot of questions. He was also TRYING to learn how to surf, good luck bro! The owner Juninho is very kind and a incredible surfer and instructor. The school have a lot of surf boards for beginners and also for intermedian and professionals. The other surf instructors like Randú and Kris are very good teachers (instructors) and are very patient with you. It's a very familiar vibe! The surf lessons are available for groups or private, also with video analysis.I will definitely come back to the Urcia Surf School. Only love for that ❤️

Guys and gals, if you are in search of the perfect surfing school and instruction, look no further. Urcia Surf School IS THE REAL DEAL!!!I recently visited with my sister who is 15 years old. With the help of the coach from Urcia Surf School, she was able to get up on her board and ride a wave ON HER FIRST TRY. I got up on my first try but was overcome by the amazing feeling of catching a wave and fell off. With a few tips and words of wisdom from the coach, on my second try I was able to get up and ride the entire wave.Through out our session, he continued to help us improve, adding in techniques and advice as we progressed. While we were catching wave after wave with the help of the coach, others that were experienced but not students of Urcia were not catching waves like we were. It was a true example of how important the right coach is, and how knowledge is the foundation to success in any venture, including surfing.Our coach was extremely friendly and easy to talk to. He was on time to our session, and had everything you could need such as boards, wet suits, water shoes, and even sunscreen.He spoke the best english of anyone I met in my entire trip in Peru. This was especially helpful in understanding the nuances to surfing.If you are looking to rent a board, learn how to surf, or just meet amazing people, I can not recommend enough that you stop by Urcia Surf school. THANK YOU JUNINHO URCIA! I can't wait to surf again with you all one day!

I stayed there for 1 month not knowing anything about surfing. The hostel and the surf school are awesome. So many talented surfteachers trying to share every knowhow they have. After a month I was able to improve so quickly that I even went on a shorter board.This was the best visit and hospitality ever! The Urcia Family always welcomes you from the bottom of their heart. Would always recommend

We had 3 lessons with Juninho from Urcia surf school. We were surprised when we arrived that our surf coach Juninho was a national surf champion and had also been on the pro tour!It was pretty awesome having Juninho as our coach! He was very enthusiastic and brought good vibes to Huanchaco surf breaks. We are intermediate surfers and he gave us some tips on our surfing style. At the end of the three lessons I noticed an improvement and felt more confident catching waves. We also did a day trip to Chicama with another surf instructor Andre. This was also a really fun day! Urcia helped make our holiday in Peru really fun! Thanks Urcia surf school!

Spanish Lessons

Combining surfing with learning Spanish
If besides surfing you are up for another challenge, we also offer Spanish lessons as an option for all our surf camp packages. It’s not uncommon for the friendly locals of Huanchaco to start a conversation or give you surf tips while waiting for the next set of waves. Thus you can directly put your new Spanish skills to practice. What better and more relaxed way of learning Spanish than doing so while surfing?

Spanish Lessons
For the Spanish lessons we work together with Manuel, a local spanish teacher with a lot of experience. In 1-hour lessons in small groups he will help build your confidence speaking and understanding Spanish, so that in no-time you will be able to chat with the locals, be it in the line-up or at the bar. The first Spanish lesson your current level will be assessed and based on that the focus for the rest of the course will be determined. At the end of every class you will receive some homework to continue learning in between classes at your own pace. 

Caballito tour

For thousands of years local fishermen have been using Caballitos de Totora (reed surfboard-like boats) to navigate the ocean and surf the waves. It’s how surfing in Peru started! During our Caballito tour, Santos Urcia – father of Juninho – will show you how a caballito is made and will explain about this tradition that is still very much alive today. Of course you will have plenty of opportunity to try riding one yourself and catch some fish! Afterwards we will have a traditional Peruvian Ceviche lunch where we will prepare the catch of the day together. The tour takes about half a day in total.

Massage

After some days of intense surfing a massage can pep you up again! Massages last 1 hour and take place at our masseurs. Let your masseur know which muscles you prefer to be treated.

Yoga

Start or end your day with a relaxing yoga session! The sessions take 1 hour and take place at the beach. Your yoga instructor will adapt the exercises to your level.

Breakfast

Our hearty and healthy surfer breakfast includes coffee or tea, yogurt, cereals, fresh fruits, bread, cheese, ham and eggs. 

We cater for vegetarians, vegans and or alergies. Please indicate this in the comment area.
