HISTORY OF SURFING IN HUANCHACO

If there is a place in the world where surfing is more than a sport, it is a way of life rooted in the local culture and history itself, that place is Huanchaco. Located on the north coast of Peru, 500km from Lima, this charming city has long been a haven for wave lovers and has played a pivotal role in the history of surfing in Peru.

The Waves: A Gift of Nature

Huanchaco is blessed with perfect conditions for surfing, thanks to its strategic location facing the mighty Pacific Ocean. Consistent, world-class waves make this coast a unique place to ride over the water’s crest. Surfing can be practiced all year round and there are waves for all levels.

Ideal Conditions for Surfing all year round

The temperate climate and year-round water temperature make Huanchaco an ideal destination for surfing in any season. The waves are more consistent in the months of April to November, when there is an offshore wind that creates optimal surf conditions. Both beginners and advanced surfers will find Huanchaco the perfect place to improve their skills and conquer new feats in the water.

Local Surf Schools: Learn from local Masters

For those who wish to learn to surf or perfect their technique, the local surf schools in Huanchaco offer classes and programs adapted to all ages and experience levels. Local instructors, with in-depth knowledge of the waves and currents, will guide you on your journey to master the art of surfing. It doesn’t matter if you are a complete beginner or an intermediate enthusiast, surf schools will give you an unforgettable experience in the water. I chose the best surf school in the city: Urcia Surf school. The teachers are well-known world champions.

Enjoying the Surf Paradise

Beyond the waves, Huanchaco offers a relaxed and friendly environment that allows surfers to immerse themselves in the local culture and enjoy authentic Peruvian hospitality. After an epic session in the water, surfers can explore the town’s quaint streets, sample delicious Peruvian cuisine at local restaurants, and immerse themselves in Huanchaco’s rich history and traditions.

In summary, Huanchaco is much more than a surf destination; it is a sanctuary where the passion for the waves is intertwined with the history and culture of the region. Whether you are an experienced surfer or a newbie excited to try the waves for the first time, Huanchaco awaits you with open arms to provide you with an unforgettable surf experience that will remain etched in your memory forever.

Caballito tour

For thousands of years local fishermen have been using Caballitos de Totora (reed surfboard-like boats) to navigate the ocean and surf the waves. It’s how surfing in Peru started! During our Caballito tour, Santos Urcia – father of Juninho – will show you how a caballito is made and will explain about this tradition that is still very much alive today. Of course you will have plenty of opportunity to try riding one yourself and catch some fish! Afterwards we will have a traditional Peruvian Ceviche lunch where we will prepare the catch of the day together. The tour takes about half a day in total.

Spanish Lessons

Combining surfing with learning Spanish
If besides surfing you are up for another challenge, we also offer Spanish lessons as an option for all our surf camp packages. It’s not uncommon for the friendly locals of Huanchaco to start a conversation or give you surf tips while waiting for the next set of waves. Thus you can directly put your new Spanish skills to practice. What better and more relaxed way of learning Spanish than doing so while surfing?

Spanish Lessons
For the Spanish lessons we work together with Manuel, a local spanish teacher with a lot of experience. In 1-hour lessons in small groups he will help build your confidence speaking and understanding Spanish, so that in no-time you will be able to chat with the locals, be it in the line-up or at the bar. The first Spanish lesson your current level will be assessed and based on that the focus for the rest of the course will be determined. At the end of every class you will receive some homework to continue learning in between classes at your own pace.
