When it comes to delighting the senses with a unique culinary experience, the coast of Peru stands out as a true gastronomic paradise. And at the heart of this delicious tradition is Huanchaco, a coastal treasure that offers an explosion of authentic flavors and traditional dishes that reflect the cultural and culinary richness of the country.

The Charm of Ceviche and Tiradito

In Huanchaco, coastal gastronomy is synonymous with freshness and authentic flavor. You cannot visit this region without trying ceviche, an emblematic dish that captures the very essence of the Peruvian coast. Prepared with fresh fish, marinated in lime juice, and mixed with red onion, chili peppers, and cilantro, ceviche is an explosion of fresh, citrusy flavors that will transport you directly to the coast. If you are looking for an equally delicious variant, the tiradito is an excellent option. This dish, similar to ceviche but cut into thin slices, will surprise you with its softness and subtlety.

Local Restaurants: A Feast of Authentic Flavors

Huanchaco is full of local restaurants that will give you an authentic gastronomic experience. From cozy dining rooms to oceanfront venues, each corner offers an opportunity to savor the essence of coastal food. Standout spots include La Cabañita, known for its ceviche and fresh seafood, and Totora Restaurante, where you can try authentic coastal dishes in a cozy setting.

Delicacies Beyond Ceviche

Although ceviche is an undisputed star, Huanchaco’s coastal gastronomy offers a variety of delicious dishes that deserve a special mention. The olive octopus, with its tender pulp accompanied by a rich sauce of olives and yellow chili, is a true masterpiece. Also, you cannot miss trying the chicharrón de pescado, a perfect combination of crispy fried fish accompanied by golden yucas and criolla sauce.

A Journey of Unforgettable Flavors

Huanchaco’s coastal gastronomy is a journey of flavors that will take you to discover the authentic flavors of the Peruvian coast. From the fresh ceviche to the delicacies of the octopus al olivo and the chicharrón de pescado, each bite is a unique experience that will connect you with the rich culinary culture of Peru. Whether you are a foodie or a culinary adventurer, Huanchaco invites you to a feast of authenticity and flavor in every dish.

Caballito tour

For thousands of years local fishermen have been using Caballitos de Totora (reed surfboard-like boats) to navigate the ocean and surf the waves. It’s how surfing in Peru started! During our Caballito tour, Santos Urcia – father of Juninho – will show you how a caballito is made and will explain about this tradition that is still very much alive today. Of course you will have plenty of opportunity to try riding one yourself and catch some fish! Afterwards we will have a traditional Peruvian Ceviche lunch where we will prepare the catch of the day together. The tour takes about half a day in total.

Spanish Lessons

Combining surfing with learning Spanish
If besides surfing you are up for another challenge, we also offer Spanish lessons as an option for all our surf camp packages. It’s not uncommon for the friendly locals of Huanchaco to start a conversation or give you surf tips while waiting for the next set of waves. Thus you can directly put your new Spanish skills to practice. What better and more relaxed way of learning Spanish than doing so while surfing?

Spanish Lessons
For the Spanish lessons we work together with Manuel, a local spanish teacher with a lot of experience. In 1-hour lessons in small groups he will help build your confidence speaking and understanding Spanish, so that in no-time you will be able to chat with the locals, be it in the line-up or at the bar. The first Spanish lesson your current level will be assessed and based on that the focus for the rest of the course will be determined. At the end of every class you will receive some homework to continue learning in between classes at your own pace.
